The Application Process

Howick High School is a co-ed, English medium school offering education for Grades 8 to 12, with a small weekly accommodation facility serving the community of Howick and the surrounding districts.

Applications for enrolment into Grade 8 can be submitted from the beginning of term 1 in the pupil’s Grade 7 year. Applications for Grades 9 to 11 can be made at any time of the year.

Please ensure that you have all the required information and documentation prepared and saved on your computer or mobile phone before you begin completing the form.

You will need to have the following documents ready:

  • the learner's UNABRIDGED birth certificate. (In the event that the UNABRIDGED certificate is not available, the ABRIDGED certificate can be used in the interim but you will need to supply a copy of your receipt from Home Affairs to confirm your application for an UNABRIDGED certificate.
  • The learner's most recent school report.
  • If applying for a sports scholarship, evidence that the learner was selected to represent a district, regional, provincial or national sports team.
  • A recent photograph of the learner
  • Proof of residential address for the home at which the applicant resides, i.e. a copy of a utility bill or lease agreement. Please ensure that the bill is in the name of one of the parents/guardians of the applicant.
  • A copy of the father's ID Document
  • A copy of the mother's ID Document
  • A copy of the Legal Guardian's ID Document (where applicable).
  • A Personal Reference (Optional) - this can be a reference letter from someone outside of your family: e.g. a sports coach, youth leader or someone within their school community who knows the child and their family.

All documents should be saved on your computer/mobile phone in .pdf or .jpg format and should not be larger than 60MB in size.  Should any of these documents be more than one page long, the document should be saved as a single file and not a separate file for each page.

Grade 8 applications: We recommend that you complete and submit an application, including the required documents, by 28 February in the learner's Grade 7 year. Any forms received after this date will be added to the waiting list.

Howick High School has four scholarships available for Grade 8 learners: two Academic Scholarships and two Sports Scholarships. These scholarships cover either half of or the full school fees for the learner’s Grade 8 year at Howick High School. Should your child qualify to apply for a Grade 8 Scholarship, this option will appear on the main online admission application form. Applications for the 2025 scholarships closed on 28 February 2024.  It is regretfully not possible to give consideration to applications received after that date.  Applications for the 2026 Scholarships open on 11 December 2024.

The Admissions Committee will meet in March and aim to have all responses to applications finalised by the end of May. Reponses will be communicated via email – please ensure that the email address you have provided is correct and it is regularly checked.  To ensure our email does not end up in your ‘junk’ or ‘spam’ folder, please add the email addresses admissions@howickhigh.co.za, admin@howickhigh.co.za and marketing@howickhigh.co.za to your safe senders list (or ensure that you regularly check your ‘junk’ or ‘spam’ folder as well as your inbox).

Grade 9 – 11 applications: Applications for these grades can be submitted at any time. Applicants are asked to note that we will only be in a position to advise whether we are able to enrol the applicant if and when a place becomes available in that grade. The Admissions Secretary will communicate responses via email – please ensure that the email address you have provided is correct and it is regularly checked.

Please note:

  • We are unable to accept applications for Grade 12.
  • Submission of this application does not guarantee admission. We recommend that you apply to more than one school as there is a limited number of pupils which we can accommodate in our classrooms and accommodation facility.
  • In terms of the provisions of section 40 of the South African School's Act, 84 of 1996, parents are obliged to pay school fees. School fees are determined in consultation with the parents of this school. In 2024, the school fee is R42 400 and the increase for 2025 will be determined at the AGM in November 2024. School fees are payable in full and in advance on or before 29 February 2024, but the Governing Body of the School may accept payment of school fees in instalments, provided that an ‘Agreement To Pay School Fees’ form has been completed and returned to the School on or before 29 February 2024. Should the parents fail to return the 'Agreement to pay school fees' form to the School on or before 29 February 2024, payment of the full school fees due must be made on or before 29 February 2024.
